Plan your phlebotomy training

  1. 1

    Check the school credentials

Look for the named institutional accreditation or school authorization below each listing. CCRI and Bristol publish NECHE institutional accreditation; the Rhode Island OPC directory lists local proprietary schools.

  2. 2

    Review the admission checklist

Read the prerequisites for your chosen course. CCRI's certificate requires a high school or GED transcript, placement evidence and a Health Sciences application; Cranston's adult courses also require a pre-test and background paperwork.

  3. 3

    Reserve time for clinicals

Bristol requires a consecutive three-week, 120-hour daytime clinical practicum. Massasoit places students in a full-time, unpaid 120-hour practicum after classroom study, so evening classes alone do not describe the full commitment.

  4. 4

    Confirm your exam pathway

Ask which national test the course prepares you to take and whether the fee is included. 911Programs names the National Healthcareer Association; Health and Home Care names the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians among its options.

  5. 5

    Match training to employers

911Programs explains that Rhode Island does not license individual phlebotomists. Massachusetts programs also prepare students for national examinations; ask a prospective employer which credential and clinical experience it requires before choosing your course.

Phlebotomist jobs and wages around Providence

For May 2025, BLS estimated 1,180 phlebotomist jobs in the Providence-Warwick, RI-MA metro area. It reported a median wage of $22.32 an hour and $46,430 a year. The figures refer to occupation 31-9097 across the metro, including employers on both sides of the state line. Read the BLS metro OEWS table; BLS release tables identify this as the latest May release.

Treat those wages as a regional reference when weighing tuition and travel costs. They describe existing employment, rather than vacancies or what a new graduate will receive. Ask employers about certification, specimen-processing duties, shift hours and travel between collection sites.

Published phlebotomy costs and funding

Cranston Adult Education publishes $1,550 for tuition and books. American Safety lists $2,995 for its eight-week course. Phlebotomy Training Specialists lists $1,585 tuition and a $1,995 total including registration, materials and the national exam. Each amount comes from a page checked October 27, 2026; request a complete quote for your start date.

For college study, CCRI says phlebotomy students are eligible for financial aid. Submit the FAFSA and ask whether Pell or another grant fits your enrollment. Veterans and eligible dependents can have CCRI Veteran Services check the exact program for GI Bill use.

A DLT American Job Center coach can help you explore free or reduced-cost workforce training, including applicable WIOA assistance. Ask about employer tuition support before starting. Confirm coverage in writing, including any work commitment, and plan for transportation during clinical placement.

Questions for a phlebotomy school

  • What school authorization or accreditation covers this campus?
  • How many supervised blood draws will I complete?
  • Who arranges clinical placement, and how long might I wait?
  • Can the clinical schedule fit my work hours?
  • Which national certification exam will I be eligible to take?
  • Are books, supplies, background checks and testing included?
  • What happens if a clinical site changes or rejects my placement?

How to check a school

Common questions

Do Rhode Island and Massachusetts license phlebotomists?

Rhode Island does not license individual phlebotomists, according to 911Programs' licensing explanation; RIDOH's phlebotomy page covers collection stations. Southwestern Community College's state disclosure says neither Rhode Island nor Massachusetts requires phlebotomy certification by state law. School authorization is a separate issue, and employers may require a national credential. Confirm the hiring requirements for the position you want.

How long do phlebotomy classes take?

You can choose different formats. American Safety lists eight weeks, while CCRI's credit certificate takes two part-time semesters. Classroom length may leave out waiting time for clinical placement. 911Programs lists twelve weeks plus a two-week internship that may not immediately follow classes. Request the expected completion date for every required component.

Can I keep a daytime job during training?

Check the clinical hours before relying on an evening class schedule. Cranston teaches Monday and Wednesday evenings, but assigns clinical rotations as labs have space. Bristol requires three consecutive daytime clinical weeks, Monday-Friday. Ask how much notice you receive and whether a placement can require time away from work or travel beyond your usual commute.

Does a completion certificate include national certification?

A school completion certificate and a national exam credential are separate. 911Programs awards a completion certificate and prepares students for the National Healthcareer Association examination. Healthcare-Edu also prepares students for NHA testing, but says students pay for the national exam. Ask which exam you qualify for, what practical experience it requires and when you can take it.

Is Brown University Health offering phlebotomy training in 2026?

No. Brown University Health's phlebotomist training page specifically says training will not be offered in 2026. Its description of a free ten-week program does not establish an available class, so that course is absent from this table. Use the listed schools' published intake dates and confirm that a seat and clinical placement are available before paying.
